Long before Election Day, the race to the ballot box has already begun - and for Israelis living abroad, the starting line is at the airport.
With 57 days remaining until the vote, demand is surging among overseas Israelis seeking to travel home to cast their ballots. In response, the Fly&Vote initiative reports high interest in special flights arranged specifically to meet the demand.
Organized by the AID Coalition, the initiative has so far secured seven dedicated flights to Israel: Six from New York and one from Lisbon. The extra routes were opened due to a severe shortage of available seats on regularly scheduled flights, and organizers report that tickets are filling up quickly.
The need for alternative air travel became especially acute in Lisbon after TAP Air Portugal announced the cancellation of its routes to Israel. For Israelis living in Portugal and neighboring regions who planned to arrive in late October, the cancellations forced a scramble to find alternative routes - right as election-bound travel demand began to peak.
To address the shortage, Fly&Vote is offering passengers a special flight out of Lisbon for $580 per ticket, inclusive of taxes and luggage.
$1,800 for a ticket from New York
Demand is equally strong across the Atlantic. The initiative has secured dedicated blocks of seats across six flights from New York to Israel, priced at $1,800 per ticket, including taxes and baggage.
The push goes beyond a typical holiday flight promotion; it represents a targeted effort to provide a lifeline for overseas Israelis determined to be physically present in the country on Election Day. Because Israeli law does not permit citizens living abroad to vote at foreign embassies or consulates, anyone wishing to exercise their democratic right must return to Israel.
Fly&Vote aims to eliminate this initial barrier by providing bureaucratic guidance, sourcing flight options, and assisting travelers through every step of their journey until they arrive in Israel.
According to Jonathan Barsade, President of the AID Coalition, the cancellation of Lisbon routes will not derail their efforts.
"We are creating solutions to problems that arise for Israelis seeking to exercise their democratic right and come to Israel to vote in the elections," Bar-Sadeh said. He added that the organization is actively developing additional travel solutions from various global destinations based on real-time demand from the field.
The special flights are currently available for booking upon registration on the Fly&Vote portal under the "Special Flights" tab. Organizers emphasize that seat availability is limited and filling rapidly.
For Israelis overseas, the upcoming election cycle has already begun - starting not with the decision of whom to vote for, but with the challenge of how to reach the polling station.
