Some 9,000 fewer tourists entered Israel last month than in the same period the previous year, a drop of five percent but a smaller decrease than in the first four months of 2007.
According to figures released Monday by the Tourism Ministry, just under 180,000 travelers arrived in Israel in May 2007, down from 189,000 the year before.
But while the numbers were lower than in May 2006, they suggest the gap is narrowing between tourist arrivals in 2007 and in the period before last summer's Second Lebanon War, which caused a sharp and lasting decline in the number of travelers arriving in Israel.
Overall, 832,900 tourists entered Israel in the first five months of 2007, a decrease of six percent from the parallel period the previous year.
