CBS: Net household income didn't decline in 2009

Israeli households seemed to have weathered the global recession relatively well, according to the latest Central Bureau of Statistics report findings released on Wednesday.
According to the report, Israeli households' average net (netto) income rose 0.2 percent to NIS 11,354 per month in 2009 from the previous year, with Israeli households succeeding in maintaining
their level of disposable income even while households' average gross (bruto) income declined 1.5 % to NIS 13,578 per month.
While Israeli households managed on average to hold onto their income through the global downturn, the CBS report indicates that Israel still has problem with social inequality in comparison
with most other developed countries. In 2009, the top quintile of Israeli household income earners receive 41% of all Israeli household income, while the bottom quintile earned only 6% of total
household income. Israel's Gini coefficient, a measure of national income inequality, rose to 0.389 points in 2009, although the CBS report found that the relatively small increase in measured
inequality in Israel from 2008 to 2009 was not statistically significant.
Israel's level of income inequality across society is rather high relative to most OECD countries, which together have an average Gini coefficient of 0.31.
