Canadian diplomats at the UN boycotted a speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday.

In past years, Canadian officials, including Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon, have conspicuously walked out during Ahmadinejad's speech as a protest against Iran's nuclear program and human rights record.

"Past speeches by the Iranian president in UN fora have contained elements of Holocaust denial, Antisemitism and condemnation of Israel," Cannon told the Winnipeg Free Press.

"Canada believes that this type of behaviour violates the UN's spirit of international co-operation, and we have chosen not to engage with President Ahmedinejad in this forum."
