Conversion Bill headed to first reading in Knesset

The Conversion Bill passed the Knesset Constitutional Law and Justice Committee on Monday and will now go on to face a first reading in Knesset.

After a discussion of the bill, committee chairman MK David Rotem (Israel Beiteinu), who proposed the legislation, decided to remove a section of the bill stating that conversion in Israel does not automatically qualify someone for citizenship.

Both Shas and United Torah Judaism supported the bill, despite originally opposing it.

According to Rotem’s bill, city rabbis will also have the authority to conduct conversions, but these will be under the full authority and responsibility of the Chief Rabbinate.
