Erdogan asks Obama to support the nuclear deal with Iran

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey defended its attempt to resolve the nuclear standoff between Iran and Western powers on Friday, saying the deal brokered in cooperation with Brazil could put an end to the crisis.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office said he told US President Barack Obama in a letter that the deal "has opened the door for a diplomatic solution." Erdogan's office said the letter also gave details of the uranium deal.

The deal failed to ease concerns in the West, which fears that Teheran will continue to enrich uranium to higher levels.

The US introduced a resolution this week calling for a series of economic and trade restrictions, after winning support from China and Russia.
