Fernando Gentilini is new EU special representative to the peace process

The European Union has appointed Fernando Gentilini as the new EU Special Representative for the Middle East peace process for a year period, until the end of April 2016.

He will be tasked with helping to facilitate between the parties and to help set up a possible new framework for negotiations.

Gentilini, who was former director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey for the EU's External Action Service, has an extensive career in foreign affairs.

From May 2011 to January 2012, he was EU Special Representative in Kosovo.
