Israel must play a central role in the reconstruction of Gaza, the United States said on Wednesday.

In a press briefing in Washington, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki welcomed agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority which allowed the entry of aid and material into Gaza Strip, following 50 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

The US expected both sides to agree on a permanent cease-fire, Psaki added, that will prevent another cycle of violence.
