TOKYO — Japanese prosecutors on Friday said they have formally decided to drop their case against a Chinese captain whose fishing boat collided with Japanese patrol vessels near disputed islands, an incident that caused a deep diplomatic rift between the two Asian neighbors.

Prosecutors also will not indict a former Japanese coast guard officer who admitted having leaked a video of the collision on YouTube, an official in the prosecutors' office in Okinawa said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The collision in September near islands in the East China Sea known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China inflamed tensions between the two countries, with China suspending ministerial-level contacts.
