Knesset panel slams Israeli sociologists for boycotting Ariel University

The Knesset Education, Sports and Culture Committee criticized the Israeli Sociological Society on Wednesday for its calls to boycott Judea and Samaria based Ariel University.

“There is no room for academic boycotts in the State of Israel,” acting committee chairwoman MK Meirav Ben Ari said at the committee meeting.

Earlier this month, Prof. Uri Ram of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, the newly elected president of the Israeli Sociological Society, called for a boycott the university.

“We will not cooperate with the institute known as Ariel University, which is not located within the bounds of the State of Israel,” he said in an interview with Army Radio.

Igal Cohen, a representative of Ariel University told the Knesset committee on Wednesday that there was a conference scheduled to be held at the university this summer.  However, Prof. Ram informed the school that the Society, under his leadership, intended to boycott the conference, and that he would bring this decision to a vote among all the members.
