KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will be charged for his role in street protests against the government that turned violent last month, a police spokesman said on Monday.

The charges against Anwar, which an aide said were for contravening the country's Peaceful Assembly Act, come as the country gears up for national elections that Prime Minister Najib Razak is expected to called within months.
