NII reports drop in new unemployment requests

The National Insurance Institute (NII) reported Wednesday that the number of new people requesting unemployment benefits has stabilized over the last two months and even fallen by five percent compared to the month of May. An average of 17,500 new requests for unemployment benefits were received by the NII over the months of June and July, compared to May when 18,600 new people signed on. NII Director General Esther Dominissini said that the lower figure showed that large wave of layoffs seen during the last quarter of 2008 was now slowly tapering off.
