Obama appoints Philip Gordon new Middle East coordinator

US President Barack Obama has appointed veteran foreign policy expert Philip Gordon as the new coordinator for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf region, the White House announced Saturday, according to AFP.

Gordon, who has served as the assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs since 2009,  was scheduled to begin in his new position on March 11.
