The European Union Monday said it would recognize a Palestinian state at an "appropriate" time, but stopped short of giving that recognition now, AFP reported.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton Monday, urging her to "take a step toward recognition of the state of Palestine based on the 1967 borders," according to the report.
