Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin on Thursday called for elections to be held "as soon as possible", and for the Knesset to be dissolved in the first hours of the winter session.

Speaking at a visit to the West Bank outpost of Migron, Rivlin said that "there is no doubt the decision has been made, and that the political parties are preparing for elections."

"We are in the midst of a world economic crisis that threatens Israel's economy without a budget for 2013. This has disastrous consequences for the socio-economic situation and the weak sectors," Rivlin added.

The Knesset's winter session is due to start on the 15th of October.
