SDL to build one of largest desalination plants in the world

SDL signed an agreement with the government of Israel on Tuesday to build, operate, and eventually turn over (BOT) a 150 million cubic meter per year desalination plant at Soreq. The reverse osmosis plant will be one of the largest of its kind when it is completed around 2013.
The Treasury said SDL, which is comprised of IDE and Hutchison Water, won the tender by offering the best price for each cubic meter of desalinated water - NIS 2.01. That amount rivals the cost of water from Lake Kinneret, National Infrastructures Minister Uzi Landau said during the signing ceremony.
The Soreq plant will join three other plants - in Ashkelon, Palmahim, and Hadera - to provide nearly 600 million cubic meters of water per year by 2013. That would represent most of the drinking water in Israel, Landau said.
