Turkey to boost pipeline security after attacks

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey says it will reinforce security for gas and oil pipelines following a spate of attacks blamed on autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz would not go into details in an interview on CNN-Turk television on Thursday but said the measures would involve greater policing and the use of advanced surveillance systems. He gave no estimate on the cost.

In August, suspected Kurdish rebels blew up an Iraqi-Turkish oil pipeline and an Iran-Turkey gas pipeline in separate attacks, cutting supplies for several days. Two people were killed in the second blast.

Turkey, which straddles Asia and Europe, is vying to become a regional energy hub.

Yildiz said sabotage of the pipelines could threaten future projects.
