UN: 36 personnel killed, nearly 200 missing in Haiti

Thirty-six UN personnel have been killed in the Haiti earthquake, nearly 200 are still missing and eight have been rescued from the rubble of collapsed buildings, UN officials said Thursday.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters a UN security guard was pulled out alive from the collapsed UN headquarters building in Haiti's capital early Thursday morning.

He called the rescue of Estonian close protection officer Tarmo Joveer "a small miracle" in the face of many deaths and the grim search for the missing.

David Wimhurst, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission speaking by videoconference from Port-au-Prince, said early Thursday afternoon that the dead include 19 UN peacekeepers, four international police officers and 13 civilians.

He said about 160 UN national and international staffers were unaccounted for along with 18 police and 10 military personnel.
