16 trapped, 1 killed after suspected blast in northern China coal mine

A state news agency says one person has been killed and another 16 are trapped after an accident at a coal mine in northern China. Xinhua News Agency says seven miners managed to escape from the Wujiu coal mine outside Datong city in Shanxi province. The Sunday report says a preliminary analysis of Saturday's accident shows an apparent blast is likely to blame. Xinhua's report did not give details of the rescue operation. Several local officials reached by telephone say they have no more information. China's mines are the world's deadliest, with explosions, cave-ins and floods killing nearly 3,800 people last year.
