Hapoel Jerusalem made yet another impressive signing on Wednesday as it continues to strengthen its roster ahead of the upcoming season, announcing the addition of former NBA player Austin Daye.
The American forward joins the Israeli champion from Turkish team Galatasaray where he averaged 8.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 25 Euroleague games last season.
The 29-year-old Daye spent six seasons in the NBA with Detroit, Memphis, Toronto, San Antonio (where he won the championship in 2014) and Atlanta, playing a total of 293 games. He was selected 15th in the 2009 draft after two seasons in Gonzaga. Austin’s father, Darren, played in Israel with Hapoel Galil Elyon and Maccabi Rishon Lezion in the mid- 1990s.
“I’m very happy to join Hapoel,” said Daye. “I’m excited for the new season and to meet the amazing fans I’ve heard all about. I’m looking forward for an exciting season, we want to do well in the Eurocup and continue the club’s success in the Israeli league.”
Coach Fotis Katsikaris: “I’m happy that Austin is joining us.
Austin will add length and depth in the front court positions.
With that, he showcases great shooting skills from deep.
Austin has experience in the highest levels of basketball and he is another valuable piece in our puzzle towards the upcoming season.”
Daye’s signing comes after the addition of center Alen Omic.
The 25-year-old arrived from Unicaja Malaga, which he helped to the Eurocup title last season, averaging 6.4 points and 5.5 rebounds in the competition.
