Only a quarter of people who want to quit smoking were able to stay off cigarettes for a year, even while using cessation products, according to the Global State of Smoking Survey.
While 78% of smokers want to quit, the small percentage that was successful led the survey to deduce that the products on the market aimed to help quit smoking, are not entirely helpful.
Israel is not immune to the negative health effects of smoking. Approximately 1 million people in Israel who are 21 and older smoke.
Some 8,000 Israelis die each year from medical conditions related to smoking, according to the recent survey. Smoking is one of the leading behavioral causes of death in Israel and kills up to half of smokers, The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation reported.
In September Israel prohibited smoking in public places
. The country also recently introduced regulations on e-cigarette products in August, banning Juul e-cigarettes, because of their high dose of nicotine.
The survey was produced by the Foundation for a Smoke Free World a non-profit with the goal of ending smoking in this generation.
