United Nations debates condemnation of Hezbollah tunnels

“The Lebanese Army failed to take action to protect their own territory,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in prelude to the debate.

The United Nations Security Council will hold a debate Wednesday concerning Hezbollah's recently discovered attack tunnels penetrating Israeli territory from Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking at a special briefing for the foreign press before the debate, said that Hezbollah puts the people of Lebanon at great risk and endangers their lives.

“The Lebanese Army failed to take action to protect their own territory,” he said, adding that they have failed to stop Hezbollah from growing into the threat it poses today to the region and specifically to Israel.

The prime minister said that the Lebanese Armed Forces did not know about the tunnels before they were exposed by Israel, but that the army knows about them now and needs to take immediate action to get to the entry points on the Lebanese side of the border and destroy them.
