High Court: Olmert can continue negotiating with Syria, PA

The High Court of Justice on Thursday rejected a petition filed by Likud MK Limor Livnat and ruled that the caretaker government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert may continue negotiating with Syria and the Palestinians over peace agreements. The court rejected the argument that the current negotiations differed from those conducted by Ehud Barak while he headed a caretaker government in 2001. The court upheld Barak's right to conduct negotiations, but rule that he must act with self-restraint. Livnat said Thursday's court decision prohibited Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni from doing whatever they wanted in the negotiations.
