Cameri turns 70
The Cameri Theater will mark its 70th anniversary in style on March 7, at the First Language 7 conference. The event will feature turns by members of the theater’s acting staff in which they will perform excerpts and songs taken from the best plays produced by the Cameri since its founding. The event will be emceed by actor Natan Datner and the quality thespian roll call includes Aki Avni, Lillan Baretto, Ili Gorlitzki, Yossi Graber, Moni Moshonov and 90-year-old Hanna Maron.
The material for the show comes from different junctures throughout the theater’s history and also reflects the evolution of the Hebrew language, and the development of Israeli society, through dramatic political events and social upheavals, as well as cultural changes.
The works to be performed were penned by some of our leading men and women of letters, such as Nathan Alterman, Avraham Shlonsky, Hanoch Levin, Nissim Aloni and Ephraim Kishon. The musical entertainment will come from such popular shows as Esther the Queen, The Wizard of Oz, Sallah Shabati and Kazablan.

Woven consciousness
The new Woven Consciousness exhibition of textiles opened at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv last week and will run until June 15.
Textiles are something which we tend to take for granted, but they are a central element in all our lives. Fabrics also come in many shapes, colors, designs and sizes and the exhibition incorporates creations by 59 artists and designers, from across a wide range of disciplines, that offer an intriguing look at the state of contemporary Israeli textile endeavor.
The show, which is curated by Irena Gordon, brings together the work of textile designers, visual artists and multidisciplinary creators, reflecting the central part which textiles play in the search for new, rigorous, and revolutionary ways of expression, as well as practical use in the world of design and art, and the way in which its boundaries are examined and repositioned.
Today, in addition to cotton, wool, linen, silk, canvas and jute fibers there is a whole host of synthetic and other surprising substances, such as nylon, polyester, lycra, metal, glass, steel and carbon fibers, in the textile industry mix.
The exhibiting designers and artists include Gili Avissar, Irit Dolman, Inbal Hoffman, Rakefet Levy and Esther Schneider.

Female movies
The Tel Aviv Cinematheque will mark International Women’s Day, on March 7-8, with a twoday program of films made by female directors, or on female topics, from all over the world as well as talks with some of the artists.
The program lineup takes in the new Under the Radar series of movies and lectures, and opens, at 10:30 a.m., with the 1986 West German movie 40 Quadratmeter Deutschland by Turkish born director Tevfuk Baser. That will be followed by Israeli documentary Segurot, which is directed by Liat Mer and follows the lives behind bars of three inmates of women’s prison Neveh Tirtza.
Another Israeli documentary, Tal Shefi’s Not Your Life, follows the fortunes and misfortunes of the daughter of an Israeli mother and a Nepalese father, while Oscar-nominated Mexican movie Miss Bala, tells the story of a starry-eyed young Mexican woman who aims for glory in a beauty contest and ends up embroiled in the crime world.

Endless pleasure
Soprano Ayelet Cohen and pianist Nizar Elkatar will join forces, in the Endless Pleasure concert, at the Felicja Blumental Center in Tel Aviv on Monday (8:30 p.m.) in a recital of some of the most popular arias and classical works composed by Handel, Mozart, Puccini, Bizet, Ravel, Fauré and Liszt, as well as some more contemporary compositions.
The Endless Pleasure repertoire includes the titular aria from Handel’s 1743 threeact opera Semele, “Quando me’n vo” from Puccini’s everpopular work La bohème, “There’s A Place for Us” from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, and “Shlomo Gronich’s 1979 pop hit Yesh Li Sympatia.”
