Andalusian Orchestra strikes flamenco gold
The Andalusian Orchestra of Ashdod will feature in the next slot of the First International Bank of Israel’s Culture and Community project. The free concert will take place in the piazza in front of the FIBI branch at Tel Aviv’s 42 Rothschild Boulevard, at 8 p.m. on August 28.
The “Golden Age of Flamenco” concert will be based on flamenco music and its influence on the development of a range of musical styles in the Maghreb region of northwest Africa, from Libya to Morocco.
The repertoire will take in works based on the writing of Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca and material popularized by legendary flamenco singer Camaron de la Isla, as well as works performed by leading Maghreb artists such as Algerian singer Salim Halali and French-Algerian singer Elie Boniche.
The concert will feature longtime Andalusian Orchestra soloist singer Emil Zarihan and flamenco guitarist Yehuda Shweiki, with Tom Cohen conducting.
Entry to the concert is free but requires advance registration; call: (03) 513-0001 Jerusalem Dance Theater takes another step The Jerusalem Dance Theater troupe will perform its “Other Steps” show at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel Aviv at 9 p.m. on August 31.
The program comprises works by four choreographer- dancers, including Step Count by company artistic director Lior Lev. The others works include Backwardbill by Liat Weissbrot, Letters to a Dog by Eyal Nachum and Sneak Peak by Ido Batash. All four creations incorporate contemporary Israeli and European influences.
In Step Count, which will be performed by four dancers, Lev explores the value of movement in general, as well as the value and the position of individuals in society, and the inequality in society. The powerful Backwardbill duet was first performed at the Belgium Festival last year, and explores various qualities of movement, body movement and movement content. The highly energized choreography feeds off blurred gender lines, social codes and power struggles.
Nachum’s solo Letters to a Dog work will be performed by Lev, and is based American minimalism fused with expressionism.

Breezin’ at Ashkelon
The annual Breeza Festival will take place at the Ashkelon National Park from August 24 to 30. The Mediterranean music event program features some of the biggest names in the local music industry, including Eyal Golan, Rita, Miri Mesika, Mosh Ben-Ari and Hadag Nahash.
The shows will take place at three venues in the park, with Golan’s lineup including a 15-piece instrumental ensemble, while Rita will present her highly popular “20 Years of Big Love” show; both will take place on the main Amphi Stage. This year’s Breeze Festival program features the Park Party slot for the first time, with the inaugural event hosting popular hip-hop outfit Hadag Nahash, with DJ Gola opening.
All of the shows are free, except for the Golan and Rita concerts, while residents of the Gaza perimeter and those living within 40 km. of Gaza will be also have free entry to the Rita show.

Alexander’s serpent
Veteran actor Sharon Alexander will star in the one-man Aspamia Ensemble production of The Serpent, which will take place at Tel Aviv’s Tmuna Theater at 8 p.m. on August 30. The play is based on the monumental book of the same name written by 20th-century Italian author Luigi Malerba, and is directed by Dalia Shimko.
The biting black comedy tells a tale of passion, jealousy, murder and the bewildering interplay between reality and an imaginary world, in which a used record store owner goes to a police station and spins an extraordinary story of love that reveals the darker sides of his nature.
Alexander and Shimko also adapted the work for the current rendition.
