The next slot in this year’s Giant Steps jazz series at Tel Aviv’s Opera House, which will take place on Friday (March 19) at 10 p.m., highlights the work of late longserving drummer Art Blakey. The tribute will be performed by the One For All sextet, which includes Jim Rotondi (trumpet), Eric Alexander (saxophone), pianist David Hazeltine (piano), John Webber (double bass), Joe Farnsworth (drums) and Steve Davis (trombone). Blakey is primarily remembered as leader of the The Jazz Messengershard bop outfit which performed and recorded, with several differentlineups, for over 35 years. One For All trombonist Davis played on theJazz Messengers’ last CD, released in 1990, from which the sextet tookits name.Friday’s concert will feature several numbers made famous by The JazzMessengers, including “One by One,” written by veteran reedman WayneShorter, a member of the The Jazz Messengers in the late 1950s andearly 1960s, “Whisper Not” and “Moanin’.”
