Before heading to the studio next month to record her first album, Michal Geva takes the stage on Monday to showcase her femmie-folk sound. The 24-year-old, who grew up in Herzliya, says she has been singing since she could speak. When she was 15 she purchased her first guitar. She soon began playing and writing her own material - not an unexpected development, considering her older brother is Nir Geva of the band Squid. Geva herself studied at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music but left to escape the pull of "the system," as she calls it, and pursue her own independent path.
Her inspiration, she says, changes from moment to moment, but it is pain that drives her to expression in most of her songs.
Influenced by such artists as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Alanis Morissette, her distinctly feminine, melodic and folksy sound is accompanied by her band that includes Gil Lewis on guitar, Einav Cohen on piano, Guy Bar-Tor on bass and Eitan Raz on the drums. Having performed at Tel Aviv venues such as the Heineken Habima Club and the Bloom Bar, Geva's sound is also being heard via a three-song CD that is popping up at various Tel Aviv cafes and is being distributed for free.
Geva will perform Monday, September 18, at the Tmuna Theater located at 8 Shonzino Street at 10 p.m. Tickets cost NIS 40 and can be ordered by calling (03) 562-9462.
