China backs diplomacy, not sanctions, on Iran

UNITED NATIONS — China says sanctions can't resolveconcerns about Iran's nuclear program and backs diplomatic negotiationsas the best way to achieve a peaceful settlement.

China's deputyUN ambassador Liu Zhenmin made the comments at a UN SecurityCouncil meeting Thursday after the chair of the committee monitoringthree rounds of sanctions against Iran presented a report.

KeyWestern powers including the United States are pushing for a fourthround of sanctions because of Iran's refusal to halt uranium enrichmentand have sent a revised proposal to Russia and China.

But China'sLu said the door to dialogue with Teheran has not closed, and he calledon Iran to strengthen cooperation with the International Atomic EnergyAgency to remove doubts about its nuclear intentions.
