Despite new laws, Syrian forces arrest leftist

AMMAN - Syrian police arrested a leftist opposition figure overnight, suggesting that a bill passed by the government hours earlier to lift 48 years of emergency law will not halt repression, rights campaigners said on Wednesday.
Members of Syria's feared political security division took Mahmoud Issa around midnight from his house in the city of Homs, where at least 20 pro-democracy protesters have been shot dead by security forces since Monday, they said.
