Diplomat: Broad EU consensus for action on Syria

BRUSSELS - European Union member states are broadly agreed that some action is needed against Syria, including the possibility of sanctions, a senior EU foreign policy official said on Friday.
Asked about the possibility of the EU imposing sanctions on Syria, Pierre Vimont, the secretary-general of the EU's diplomatic corps, said: "I think there is broad consensus among member states that action is needed."
Ambassadors from EU member states are scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss the issue. A spokesman for the EU's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said on Thursday that "all options" were on the table when it came to sanctions.
