Egypt to apply for first Internet Arabic domain name

Egypt to apply for first

Egypt's Information Technology Minister Tarek Kamelsays on Sunday said his country will apply for the Arab world's first Internet domain written entirely in Arabic. Kamel said Sunday that new domain - pronounced ".masr" but written in the Arabic alphabet - is part of an international fast-track process to expand the scope of the Internet, making it more accessible to users who do not use Latin characters. The formal announcement will take place Monday at the second day of a United Nations-sponsored Internet conference being held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort. The domain translates as .Egypt. The focus of this year's Internet Governance Forum is increasing accessibility, particularly in emerging markets and developing nations.
