Egyptian churches withdraw from Constituent Assembly

Acting Coptic Orthodox Pope Bishop Pachomius announced Saturday that Egypt's churches were withdrawing their three members from the Constituent Assembly, the body tasked with writing the country's new constitution, Egypt Independent reported.
According to Pachomius, “the Egyptian churches sensed discomfort at the trends that prevailed [while] drafting the constitutional provisions. The constitution...in its current form does not meet the desired national consensus and does not reflect the pluralistic identity of Egypt, entrenched across generations.”
“To preserve the Egyptian identity,” Pachomius concluded, “we withdraw from the Constituent Assembly.”
