Histadrut Labor Federation chairman Ofer Eini said Sunday that a pending general strike in order to advance negotiations on the issue of the employment status of contract workers is in the hands of the National Labor Court. Eini made the comments in an interview with Army Radio.
The court was expected to hold a discussion of the issue on Sunday afternoon. Eini said that he would accept the court's decision, but added that a strike was the only way to advance negotiations. The National Labor Court issued an injunction against a general strike on the issue last month, ordering the Finance Ministry and the Histadrut to open up in negotiations. The Histadrut told the court last week that negotiations had failed to bear fruit and asked again to strike.
The Histadrut demands contract workers be moved into direct employment. Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz has offered to improve the labor conditions of contract workers, but disagrees with discontinuing the use of of cleaning and security contract companies altogether.
