Erekat: We do not oppose direct talks

Palestinian Authority Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat said Sunday that the Palestinian Authority does not oppose a move to direct talks. The comments were made on the Channel 10 program "London et Kirschenbaum."
Erekat added, however, that the PA is wary of beginning such talks without some frame of reference in regard to where each side is beginning.
"We cannot afford another failure," said Erekat, "it will create lawlessness in the West Bank."
Erekat stated that he submitted a peace plan to US envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell, who is mediating proximity talks between the two sides, that he hopes will be forwarded to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The plan could serve as the frame of reference which would give the talks a better chance of succeeding, said Erekat.
Erekat repeatedly stated that the PA does not oppose direct talks and he expressed frustration at the fact that it appears in the media that Israel and the US want face-to-face negotiations and the PA opposes the move.
