Finance c'tee passes NIS 800m budget cuts for fire service

The Knesset Finance Committee approved Monday afternoon a request for a 1.5 percent across the board budget cut that will total NIS 800 million.
The cut was designed to subsidize two projects that were added to the budget load following the passage of the budget in December 2010.
NIS 300 million will go to encourage use of public transportation through discounts to users.
The remaining NIS 500 million will be directed to the much discussed reform of Israel's fire services. After the december 2010 Carmel blaze the government promised it would deliver the additrional funds for both the firefighters and for the homefront command firefighting reservists following the opassage of the budget. Monday's vote paves the way for the realization of that commitment.
