Food importer get jail time for forging food expiry dates

The owner of a food import-export company who was convicted by the Ashdod District Court was sentenced this week to 60 days in prison for forging expiry dates to make old products seem new; two of his employees who were involved were required to do 120 hours of public service. Until now, only minor fines have been handed down for such crimes.

The charges were filed two years ago after employees of the Ashkelon District Health Office headed by Dr. Shimon Sherf discovered the cheating. The presiding judge said in the case that forging expiry dates on food products is a very serious crime, especially to the extent of this case. The district health office prepared a persuasive case against the defendants, with the result setting a precedent.

Sherf said he hoped the stiff punishment would deter other food manufacturers and importers from trying to deceive the public, take their money on false claims and endanger their health.
