Germany wants to tighten UN Libya sanctions

UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council should expand the sanctions it imposed on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his inner circle last month to increase the pressure on him, Germany's UN envoy said on Thursday.
The 15-nation council unanimously imposed a travel ban and asset freezes on Gaddafi, members of his family and close aides on Feb. 26. It also banned the sale of weapons to the North African state, which has been fighting rebel forces intent on toppling Gaddafi and ending his 41-year rule.
"We should work on the further tightening of the sanctions here in the Security Council," German Ambassador Peter Wittig told reporters ahead of a council meeting on Somalia. "That's our focus."
