Gov't approves extension of Gaza family reunification ban

The government on Sunday approved Interior Minister Eli Yishai's proposal to extend the temporary prohibition on family reunifications of Gaza Strip residents who have married Israeli citizens.
"The decision was made in accordance with security officials," Yishai said. "Reality has shown that the Palestinians take advantage of the circumstances in order to involve [themselves] with terror, including terrorist attacks."
The ban on family reunification has been temporarily extended annually for over seven years. Four years ago, the High Court of Justice ruled that the order was a breach of fundamental human rights. It was also criticized for explicit prejudice against a specific ethnic group in Israel.
