Gov’t approves transfer of Barzilai ER from old gravesite

The government on Sunday afternoon approved a plan to transfer the fortified emergency room at Ashkelon’s Barzilai Medical Center from an area under which ancient gravesites were found to a more distant parking lot, at a cost of NIS 135 million.
The controversial decision, championed by Deputy Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman, was approved by a majority of 11 to 10. Its implementation is set to begin in one month, pending the approval of Cabinet Secretary Zvi Hauser.
The plan will cause delays in the construction of the new emergency room, which is meant to protect patients from rocket fire from Gaza.
