Hizbullah congratulates Iran's president on vote

Lebanon's militant Hizbullah group congratulated Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Sunday for winning a second term in office, despite cries of voter fraud in the presidential election. Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of last Friday's vote but the results are being disputed by his reformist rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi. Hizbullah is Iran's strongest ally in Lebanon, and the group is believed to have received hundreds of millions of dollars as well as weapons from Iran over the past 25 years. "Your re-election represents a great hope to all the oppressed people, holy worriers and resistance fighters who reject the powers of arrogance and occupation," Hizbullah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said in a letter sent to Ahmadinejad. The text was carried by the group's web site Al-Manar. In another letter to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Nasrallah said Ahmadinejad's victory "brought happiness to the hearts of all the oppressed people and resistance fighters." The group says in a statement issued Sunday that Friday's vote was conducted in an atmosphere of "freedom," and that the election was just like those held the most deep-rooted democracies in the world.
