The inability of the Israel Police to enforce laws on sale of dangerous fireworks and of parents to teach their children safety rules has led to dozens of serious injuries at the Western Galilee Government Hospital alone during the Muslim and Druse Id al-Adha holiday early this week.
Dr. Masad Barhoom, director-general of the hospital in Nahariya, said Monday that burns on the face and limbs and serious harm to the eyes have always resulted from carelessness and violations of the law, and the same phenomenon occurred this week. In some years, children have lost a hand or an eye.
"The ritual of harm from fireworks, caps and other explosives repeats itself every year," he said. Their use has even grown in recent years, causing injuries that make children disabled for the rest of their lives."
Barhoom called on parents, educators and the police to do all they could to prevent the tragic phenomenon during the holiday period.
