Injured US congresswoman's condition improves

TUCSON, Arizona — The condition of a US congresswoman woman wounded in an assasination attempt is improving and she is now in serious condition at a hospital after being shot in the head about a week ago.

The University of Arizona said in a news release Sunday that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is continuing to do well. The release says her condition changed from critical to serious because she is no longer on a ventilator. She is breathing on her own.

Giffords was one of 19 people shot at a Safeway store Jan. 8. Six people were killed.

Meanwhile, a week after the Tucson supermarket massacre, a shooting victim became distraught during a televised town hall meeting and was arrested, authorities said.
