A bomb-rigged car exploded near a convoy of a top security officer in western Iraq and left at least two people dead, an Iraqi police official said Sunday.
The official said that the apparent target of the blast, police Col. Saad al-Shimari, was not injured, but two of his guards were killed. At least seven people were injured.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media.
Shimari heads police operations near Fallujah, a former insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, and has survived several previous assassination attempts.
