J'lem man arrested for rape of girl following DNA match

A Jerusalem man was arrested last Sunday for the rape of a ten-year-old girl in the city last year, after a DNA sample taken from police matched him to the crime.

The man, a 22-year-old resident of north Jerusalem, was arrested on Sunday following a brawl at the Har Hatzofim hospital in Jerusalem, where he allegedly attacked a security guard. Following that arrest a DNA sample was taken from the man, which then matched one taken from the girl. The man was arrested for the rape and on Wednesday, his remand was extended until Sunday by the Jerusalem Magistrate's court.

Shmulik Ben-Ruby, spokesman for the Jerusalem Police said Wednesday it is police procedure to take DNA samples from suspects who have been arrested for a serious crime. He added that the man does not have a criminal record and that both he and the girl are Arab citizens of the city.

In late 2012, the girl was walking home from school when the suspected pulled up next to her on a motorcycle and asked her to help him turn the vehicle on. He then took her to a secluded place where he raped her and threatened her with a knife.

In Tel Aviv, police have over the past year built up a DNA database for African migrants detained for crimes in the city. The database was reportedly key in finding the Eritrean man suspected of raping an 83-year-old woman in late December 2012 in the city.
