Kerry on Ethiopian protests: I am confident of Israel's handling of the matter

In Nairobi, US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters on Monday that he was not aware of "all the facts" of the anti-racism protests of the Ethiopian community in Israel, but he said he had confidence in Israel's handling of the matter.

"I have only been able to catch a glimpse on television, and I know that there are – the events grew out of an incident between a police officer and an Ethiopian Jewish member of the military there," Kerry said, on a trip through Sri Lanka, Djibouti, and Kenya. "I assume and believe that it will be thoroughly under investigation.

"I know the prime minister [Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu] was planning today to have meetings at the highest level with police, with military, with the individual officer and others," Kerry continued.

"I am confident that Israeli leadership will want to work this through in a way that honors the goals and aspirations and traditions and values of the people of Israel, and I think we need to give them the space to be able to do that."
