Khartoum refuses to evacuate southern Abyei region

Sudan Foreign Minister Ali Karti said his country's would not remove its army from the contested oil-rich Abyei region in southern Sudan unless a comprehensive settlement was reached, Al-Jazeera reported Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Nabil el-Araby, Karti said that Khartoum saw a serious security situation in Abyei.
Last month, 19 northern Sudanese soldiers were killed while being escorted by UN peacekeepers in a raid by southern militants, resulting in Khartoum's deployment of more troops to the region.
