Labor party reaches compromise, sets date for primary

The eight remaining Labor MKs decided in a meeting at the party's Kfar Saba headquarters on Sunday to elect the party's new leader in a September 7 primary and a possible run-off race two weeks later.

The date was a compromise between the preferences of two Labor leadership candidates, Isaac Herzog, who wanted a June primary, and Avishay Braverman, who wanted it held in November.

Ahead of the race, Labor will conduct a membership drive in an effort to double its current 28,000 members. The drive will begin following a party convention next month and will end June 7.

The MKs also decided to cancel the party constitution drafted by former party leader Ehud Barak, which gave inordinate power to the party chairman, and replace it with the constitution Labor had before.
