Mazuz forbids rabbis from receiving payment for wedding ceremonies

Mazoz no need to pay ra

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz on Tuesday instructed state-paid rabbis to adhere to a new set of regulations regarding wedding ceremonies. One regulation pertains to payment for services rendered, asserting that aside from transportation costs, rabbis must not receive payment for conducting huppas. Another regulation asks to ascertain that rabbis will not conduct more than two wedding ceremonies in one evening, unless there is no danger of an overlap. The need to place the religious aspect of marriage under legal supervision rose in recent years, as young couples found themselves doling out disproportionate sums in order to tie the knot.
