Naval ship crew saves swimmer drowning off Haifa coast

The crew of the INS Leviathan Dolphin-class submarine rescued a swimmer who was drowning off the Haifa coast on Tuesday. The submarine was above surface and on its way back into Haifa Port when Lt. E., who was standing on the bridge, heard a strange sound coming from the water. "I looked and saw a swimmer some 500 meters away," Lt. E. told reporters. "We stopped the engine and threw the swimmer a rope and he boarded the vessel." The swimmer, who was in his thirties, said he went for a swim at 9 a.m. and was swept out to sea. The submarine found him some nine kilometers off the Haifa coast. He was treated for hypothermia and was evacuated to shore by a vessel that was alerted to the scene by the crew of the Leviathan.
