Netanyahu names Roni Sofer as new spokesman

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday the appointment of veteran and widely-respected journalist Roni Sofer as one of his spokesmen.

Sofer, 52, will work under Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's chief media advisor, Gidi Schmerling. Schmerling took over that position when Nir Hefetz resigned in December. The spokesman's position inside the PMO that Schmerling left vacant in order to replace Hefetz will now be filled by Sofer.

Sofer, who has worked in various journalistic capacities since 1981, comes to the Prime Minster's Office from Ynet, where he worked as Knesset reporter for the last year. Prior to that he served as Ynet's diplomatic correspondent during the Sharon and Olmert years, earning a reputation as a hard-working, highly professional, dispassionate and accurate reporter.

Over his long journalistic career Sofer has also served as military correspondent for Ma'ariv and worked both for local and national radio stations, including a stint as Israel Radio's correspondent in Paris.
